You may have noticed that your
Facebook account will periodically send you a notification, thanking you for
bringing the world a little bit closer together. Recent apps that have gained
significant popularity over the last few years are those that aim to connect
you to friends, family—and now strangers. Grindr is an application that
connects gay men in hopes of sparking a romantic/sexual relationship. This app
is unique in the online relationship department, as it is inclusive of the gay
community.
However, while an interesting and agreeable concept, you
might wonder about the possible dangers of giving away your personal
information to a stranger from the internet, who could be a person that he/she
does not claim to be. Additionally, many people on dating sites may not be
looking for anything more than a hookup—which leads to confusion if there are
two people with different intentions. I’d say it’s definitely a “hit or miss”
situation.
Another common way that gay men can come
together is by going to gay bars. If you are unfamiliar with going to gay bars,
you may have heard of the violent riots at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich
Village, Manhattan. In 1969, a series of violent riots were conducted against a
police raid. At the time, homosexuals were still foreign and unaccepted in
society. Now, the Stonewall Inn stands as a gay historic landmark, marking gay
pride and serving as a symbol to the LGBTQ+ community.
Want to learn more about the experiences of those who use
Grindr or visit gay bars? Come see Anthony Fusco’s A Night at Stonewall Inn
to spend a night with three gay friends who visit New York City to celebrate a
birthday and perhaps pick up a cute guy. Engaging, hilarious, and
unpredictable, this play will have you laughing, until an unexpected incident
takes place, leaving you to wonder about the dangers of meeting and entrusting the
strangers you meet online.
